What the WRT Course Covers

The IICRC Water Damage Restoration Technician (WRT) course is a three-day program that teaches the science and practice of professional water damage restoration in accordance with the ANSI/IICRC S500 Standard. Technicians learn how water behaves in buildings, how damage progresses over time, and how to plan a safe, effective restoration project.

Core topics include the three categories of water — Category 1 (clean water from a supply line or rainwater), Category 2 (significantly contaminated "gray" water such as dishwasher or washing machine overflow), and Category 3 (grossly contaminated "black" water including sewage and rising floodwater) — and the four classes of water intrusion, which describe how much water is present and how deeply it has soaked into building materials.

Students also study the basics of psychrometry (the relationship between temperature, humidity, and evaporation), water extraction techniques, structural drying equipment, antimicrobial application, safety and personal protective equipment, and how to prevent secondary damage such as mold growth, which can begin within 24 to 72 hours of a water loss.
